District Selected for National BHIT Data Exchange Pilot: Advancing Behavioral Health Interoperability
The District of Columbia has been selected as one of nine national pilots in the Behavioral Health Information Technology (BHIT) Data Exchange Initiative, marking a significant step forward in advancing behavioral health data interoperability and care coordination.
Led by the DC Department of Health Care Finance (DHCF), the District was awarded $510K from Chickasaw Federal Health (CFH) LLC, with support from the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy (ASTP) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). DHCF is partnering with CRISP DC, eHealthDC, five local provider organizations, and the DC Department of Behavioral Health to carry out this work.
The pilot will test real-world implementation of USCDI+ Behavioral Health data exchange to strengthen substance use disorder (SUD) quality measurement, improve care coordination, and enhance readiness for value-based payment models. Building on the District’s existing digital health infrastructure and health information exchange (HIE) progress, the initiative will also standardize data exchange and test clinical workflows to support improved calculation of CMS Adult Core Set measures, including FUA-AD, IET-AD, and OUD-AD, within PopHealth Analytics.
Insights and outcomes from the pilot will help inform national policy and contribute to ASTP and SAMHSA’s Behavioral Health Interoperability Report, shaping the future of behavioral health data excha
